fluorescent bulb

We know you’re thinking green and replacing traditional incandescent light bulbs with more energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). While we rely on fluorescent tubes and CFLs to light up our lives, even these long-lasting fluorescents will eventually burn out. When they do, don’t throw them in the garbage! Your used fluorescents may be no longer be any good to you – but over 98% of each lamp can be recycled and diverted from landfill

Now you can return them to your local Municipal Recycling Facility or a collection event in your community.

What's included?

You’re probably familiar with the swirly-looking CFL – but CFLs come in all shapes and sizes and fit in most lamps and ceiling fixtures. Weatherproof CFLs are also available for outdoor use. The good news? All user-removable fluorescent tubes and CFLs can be returned to an Orange Drop Zone for recycling. So unwaste your space and Make the Drop!

Did you know that CFLs use two-thirds less energy and last about 10 times longer than standard incandescent light bulbs. In fact, in 2007, the Ontario government said that replacing the roughly 87 million incandescent bulbs in the province with compact fluorescents or other efficient lighting by 2012 could dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut electricity demand by six million megawatt hours a year, enough to power 600 households.

Like other Orange Drop materials, your fluorescents require special care. They do contain a small amount of mercury (about enough to fit on the tip of a ball point pen), which means that you should take proper precautions if they break. Use disposable rubber gloves when handling broken bulbs and wash your hands thoroughly afterward. Wipe the area with a damp paper towel and open the windows to ventilate. And always return burned out bulbs for recycling.
